## Summary

Return the number of the latest block known to the node.

## Parameters

This method takes no parameters.

## Returns

- **Type**: `QUANTITY`
- **Description**: Latest block number as a 0x-prefixed hexadecimal quantity.

## Notes

The result reflects the node's current head and moves as new blocks arrive; it does not imply that the block is final.
